Vascular Ultrasounds

Duplex studies

A vascular ultrasound, or duplex study, combines a traditional ultrasound image with a doppler recording. This produces a grey scale image of the blood vessel and a colored map of the blood flow. This can help your doctor diagnose blockages, narrowing, or insufficiencies in the structure.

Common vascular ultrasounds include arterial duplex, venous duplex and carotid.

An arterial duplex ultrasounds focuses on the arteries and blood flow of the upper or lower body. Similarly, a venous duplex concentrates on the veins of the upper or lower body. In contrast, a carotid ultrasound is done on extracerebral carotid arteries which run along each side of the neck to supply the brain with oxygen and nutrients.

The Procedure

The sonographer will ask the patient to lie on the exam table with the area of interest exposed. A water-based gel will be used with a wand to glide over several areas of the interest.
