Echocardiogram

Caring Child

Heart Ultrasound

An echocardiogram checks how your heart's chambers and valves are pumping blood through your heart. An echocardiogram uses electrodes to check your heart rhythm and ultrasound technology to see how blood moves through your heart. An echocardiogram can help your doctor diagnose heart conditions.

The Procedure

The sonographer will place three small, flat, sticky patches on your chest. These patches connect to an electrocardiograph (EKG) monitor that measures your heart’s electrical activity during the test.

The sonographer will ask the patient to lie on their left side on an exam table. A water-based gel will be used with a wand, also called a sound-wave transducer, to glide over several areas of the patient's chest.

The sonographer may ask the patient to change their position or hold their breath to get better images of the patient's heart.
