Many important organs are contained inside of the abdomen such as the liver, kidneys, gallbladder, spleen , pancreas and bladder. An abdominal ultrasounds might be recommended to investigate unexplained abdominal pain or to check on an unborn baby throughout pregnancy.

The Procedure

The sonographer will ask the patient to lie on the exam table with the area of interest exposed. A water-based gel will be used with a wand to glide over several areas of the interest.

Depending on the organ being imaged, the sonographer may ask you to prepare for your exam by not eating or drinking some hours before your test. In some cases, you may need to drink a specific amount of water right before your test. Or you may not need to prepare at all.
