Pelvic Ultrasounds

Medical Checkup

Reproductive studies

A pelvic ultrasound looks at the organs in your pelvic area between your abdomen and legs. Pelvic ultrasounds can preformed with an external or internal wand depending on the structure of interest. Some areas such as the prostate in men and the cervix in women are best viewed internally.

Common organs of interest for pelvic exams include the fallopian tubes, ovaries, prostate, rectum, scrotum, uterus, and the vagina.

The Procedure

The sonographer will ask the patient to lie on the exam table with the area of interest exposed under a blanket or drape.

For an external exam, a water-based gel will be used with a wand to glide over several areas of the interest.

For an internal exam, a lubricated wand will be inserted within the structure of interest .

Depending on the organ being imaged, the sonographer may ask you to drink a specific amount of water right before your test. Or you may not need to prepare at all.
